How does general anesthesia make people go unconscious?

Your nervous system uses chemical signalling. The neurons are sending some chemical substances to other neurons, that have receptors to receive them. Some substances interfere with this signaling, either by acting as the signal substances or by blocking the receptors. This leads to them being able to put your nervous system in a different state. Anesthetics lower the activity of your neural pathways, thus reducing the ability to feel pain and putting you in a sleep-like state.
