Hydrochlorothiazide, commonly known as a “water pill” is a type of diuretic. It works by causing your body to make more urine, which helps your body get rid of extra salt and water. This also reduces extra fluid in the body caused by conditions like heart failure, liver disease, or kidney disease, but in the case of regulating blood pressure, it lowers it because removing water from the body literally reduces the volume of blood in circulation. Lower volume, means lower pressure in the “pipes”.
