How does hypoglycemia work and why does it cause depressive moments when glucose isn’t present?

Not a doctor but a microbiologist. My assumption is it’s caused from the body’s reaction to not getting enough energy which causes exhaustion. I’m also unsure if the other mechanisms used to generate energy (like gluconeogenesis) are active in these situations.
