For bigger companies Microsoft offers a better solution for software registration: key management system
All licenses are on one Server and the workstations just need to talk to this one server inside the company. The workstations don’t need to talk to Microsoft anymore. Just the kms-server is talking to Microsoft.
By default windows will ask Microsoft if it’s a legit copy. This value is changed to the companys own kms-server
These tools are now creating a simple fakeserver on your computer and will always give you valid answer (=”yes your software is legit”) . It’s not running permanently, it is registered in windows taskscheduler and will run once in a month to tell your software that it is still valid.
There are also some illegal kms-servers, so in theory it is not necessary to use kmstools. You could just change the value for the kms-server to an illegal one and would be done. However still illegal and also not recommend.
