The simplest way to explain this is, if you turn off all the lights in your room you start to notice all these other light sources like the standby light from your TV/monitor, the light from your alarm clock display, and the little green light from your phone charging. These small light sources seems bright and actually light up your room in a small way, now turn on the lights in the hallway and leave the door a bit open now you have light pollution and those previously bright light sources are now barely visible

Light in the atmosphere scatters. Light that travels up into the sky gets scattered and makes the sky appear lighter. This extra light makes it harder to see stars, which are light points on a dark background. It lightens the background.

Lots of artificial light sources like street lights makes it difficult to see stars and other astronomical features like the northern lights.
