It essentially prevents nerves in an area from communicating. It does this by blocking a channel through which sodium ions flow and change the voltage of the neuron due to a charge on the ion.

This mechanism also gives rise to the alternate name for local anaesthetic – nerve block.

To be able to feel pain, the nerves need to be able to send signals from the hurt spot to your brain. Local anesthesia blocks that signal. But only in the area it’s been injected or applied. Which is why it’s called local.
