How does microscopy with a laser pointer work?

[This video](http://youtu.be/NIshZmYLVSs) kind of explains it. I think I maybe understand how it works but I might still need confirmation. So, if someone could explain this to me, I would be glad.

Also, is there normally a type of professional microscopy like this?

If i understand this video correctly, this is pretty much just a droplet of water acting as a lense, nothing more.
The laser is not essential, its just a convenient source of directional light.
