How does my Brita pitcher know when the filter should be changed?

I tried googling this, but all the answers appear to be many years ago when the design was different. Back then, it was just a simple timer. But I think it may be different now.

My pitcher has 3 lights on the top labeled, 100%, 25%, and 0%. Whenever I tilt the cover regardless if it’s attached to the pitcher or not one of those lights blinks 3 times after the cover is leveled again supposedly indicating the approximate life left of the filter inside.

Is it still a simple timer or is it guessing at how much water passes through the filter based on how long it’s tilted for each pour?

If it is time based and I’m just a single guy, not a family as Brita might assume, would that mean I could use the filters for much longer after the 0% light begins to blink?

The filter is rated for a certain amount of gallons. The indicator is on the lid, and it figures every time you lift the lid you are filling the tank.

Say the tank holds 3/4 of a gallon. (All made up numbers) They figure the filter is good for 100 gallons, and you probably don’t wait until it’s completely empty to top it off. So they would warn you at about 200 top lifts that you should change the filter soon.

I bought a brita very recently. Doesn’t have lights that blink, but the manual explains it is a simple timer based on typical usage by a 4 person family.

Yours may be more complicated with sensors. Hard to say without a model number.
