To add,

Your liver breaks down old and dead red blood cells – specifically, it’s recycling the iron in hemoglobin, and discarding the protein matrix that surrounded it. It’s why liver is so rich in iron. Now that the liver has this waste, it needs to get rid of it, and luckily there’s already a path to the dump, the bile duct!

Bilirubin is also known as bile pigments. Your poop is bleached white by your stomach acids, and take it from me – if you ever had a bad case of… You know… Your first solid… Solids, might very well come out white. TAKE IT FROM ME.

And that’s because when you return to normal there’s nothing impeding the path, so stuff can rush through without spending adequate time picking up bile pigments on the way.

If things are coming out black, that means either A) you’ve binged on Oreos, or B) you’re bleeding internally and should see a doctor. That sort of thing doesn’t just happen, so if it’s not strongly associated with a food stuff, you might want to be concerned.
