How does my phone know that my headphones are turned on when the bluetooth setting is off?

This was changed in many phones a few years ago. The off switch doesn’t turn off the Bluetooth module any more but just disables all data transfer. That way the devices can still see each other but you have the illusion that ‘Bluetooth is off’
