How does one get common cold and how does it automatically go away without any treatment in a week or so?

The commom cold is caused by a virus, which can easily be picked up in public transport, schools, work, by not washing dishes properly, etc. It just goes away cause your immune system can handle it by itself. Any treatment you get is there to help your immune system. An otherwise healthy adult has an immune system that can fend off smaller infections like a cold on its own. Small children, old people, people with weakened immune systems, have a harder time fending off infections, so a cold will take longer to clear up.
