Our “gut” reactions typically come from our lower brains — that is, not the frontal cortex that provides us our logical thoughts, but the so-called “caveman brain,” or the *limbic lobe.* Here we find, among other structures, the *amygdala,* part of the brain responsible for processing memory and emotional responses — chiefly, fear.
This “lower” or “caveman” brain gets this name not necessarily because it’s less well-developed, but because it guided our caveman ancestors.
When something “in your gut” tells you something, and you can’t understand why, it’s likely coming from somewhere in your caveman brain, trying to help you out.
