Plants need nutrients from the soil in order to grow and multiply. If there isn’t enough in the soil, the plant will grow more slowly and won’t produce as much or as high a quality of fruits or vegetable or seeds or whatever it is we want from it.
When we fertilize the soil, we add more nutrients to the soil in an attempt to allow plants to produce as much as possible. You need to be careful, though – too much of some kinds of nutrients can actually harm the plant as well.
