How does practice actually improve reaction time? What is actually going in the brain?

The simple way I’ve understood it:
Every task requires a specific neural pathway in your brain.
We have many of these in our brain already for every day tasks.
A new task will create a new pathway which over time will as the pathway is triggered over and over it will become reinforced and permanent.
