how does sending out a ping (sonar) create sonar images?

Send out a high frequency sound, it’ll bounce against anything it hits and come back and picked up by a machine. By calculating how long it took for the sound to get there and back you can tell how far away the object was, and hence, with all the different vibrations (sound) coming back at different times, you can create an image.
