how does sending out a ping (sonar) create sonar images?

We utilize both a sender and receiver. The sender fires a pulse, the pulse reflects off the target, and the receiver listens for that pulse. We know how fast the pulse moves and can measure the direction it comes from, this can be used to calculate the size and distance of the object that reflected the pulse.
