how does slow release medication work?

tagged in biology cause i’m not sure what else to tag it in. i’ve recently started a new slow release medication, i understand that the effects last all day but i don’t understand what within the medication makes it slow release.

The pill is formed in layers of active ingredient within a slow-to-dissolve ingredient. This makes it give off the drug slowly instead of basically as soon as it gets to your stomach.

This is also why it’s crucial to not crush or chew time release capsules. It defeats the point.
