how does smoking contribute to the risk of stroke?

My doctor always talks about smoking and how it’s a factor for stroke, but I have no idea the science or reasoning behind this and I would like to understand. Can someone please break this down and explain the connection to me? Thank you in advance, good people of Reddit.

The chemicals in cigarettes have been linked with damage to the circulatory system and blood cells.

Over time, and especially in conjunction with other lifestyle factors, this can result in the thickening and hardening of blood vessel walls, build-up of plaque inside the blood vessels, and more common spontaneous clotting.

All of these factors mean the chance of the blood supply to the brain being interrupted (a stroke) is increased.
