There are two types of sunscreen: chemical and physical. Physical sunscreen is like paint like u/WRSaunders described. Chemical sunscreen absorbs the energy from light rays. If that energy wasn’t absorbed, it would cause DNA damage and then inflammation, which is the redness and pain you feel when you get a sunburn.
