How does Terminal Lucidity work?

Hey, Caboose here. I was watching a neat documentary on this fellow who passed away during a baseball game from a nasty fall. And, it briefly mentioned that after he hit his head he had perfect speech and mental clarity. They said “terminal Lucidity” was why and kinda left it at that.

How does that work? Is there some sweet spot between being hit hard enough that you die and being hit hard enough you lose speech and consciousness that you’re fine? Is it just your body’s “oh crap we’re gonna die” mode?

The short answer is we don’t really know why, but sometimes, people who are dying who have not been previously lucid for whatever reason (mental illness, dementia, brain damage, etc etc) have a brief experience of clarity of thought and speech before dying.

This isn’t a consistent phenomenon and we don’t yet have scientific consensus on what “counts” as terminal lucidity or what the causes might be.
