How does that tape that only sticks to itself work?

I just got a blood draw and they wrapped the gauze with a tape that didn’t stick to my skin but adhered very firmly to itself. Not velcro or similar, but very much an adhesive effect. How does this work?

It’s Coban wrap or similar. And it works through compression, not necessarily by adhesion per se. Kind of the way dough works. You can make layers of dough. If you put flour in the middle they don’t stick together. But if you apply pressure, no amount of flour can stop the dough from reincorporating with itself given enough pressure. Same basic principle with Coban tape.
