Some cells contain pockets called vesicles, where they can pile up a neurotransmitter or hormone and hold it indefinitely. When you need it, you produce something called a ‘releasing factor’ or ‘releasing hormone’, which tells all the cells in an area to pop their vesicles and let out the thing they’ve been storing.
