how does the internet go around the whole world?

I have basic understanding of hardware. I get wifi, kind of… But like, shouldn’t there be cables in the ocean to connect our continents? But that’s so stupid. How is it done?

Edit: Interestingly, most cables are owned by many telecommunications companies at each end, however, there are some owned by single parties e.g Google!

Edit 2: There are stats on each cable including date laid, ownership, length etc
