Each team gets a pick in each of the seven rounds. They are allocated so that the team with the worst record in the previous season picks first in each round followed by the second worst etc. there are a bunch of rules on how ties are broken.

Teams can trade their picks for players or other picks. For example, the Chicago Bears traded their first round pick last year to the Carolina Panthers for this year’s Panthers’ first round pick. It turns out the Panthers had the worst record this past season so the Bears got the first pick.

Each team gets 10 minutes to make their pick or possibly trade it. The Bears used it to pick Caleb Williams a quarterback who played for the University of Southern California.

Players who have completed their final year of eligibility in college are eligible for the draft. Also players who have completed at least two years can declare their interest to be drafted.
