How does topical medication strength work?

Say there’s two topical medications which are the same, except one is 5% active ingredient and the other is 10%. (An example might be benzoyl peroxide acne medication.) Why can’t you just apply twice as much of the 5% to get the same result?

The reason you can’t jusy apply more is because surface area.

The cream is only coming into contact with thr skin at a very thin layer. The rest just sits on top.

In order to get more into the skin, you need the concentration at the layer in contact to be higher.

Its like writting on your skin with a sharpie. You can only write on what you can reach, writting on the same marked area isn’t gona change anything really because that area is already exposed to as much ink as it can be.
