Vitamin C is a body chemical that, among other functions, repairs a protein that in turn is responsible for repairing collagen, the main holding-things-together material in animal bodies.

If you don’t get enough vitamin C in your body, you won’t have enough working repair protein, and wound-healing, which mostly consists of tying things together with collagen, won’t work right. If you go *way* too long without getting enough vitamin C, even old wounds can open back up. It’s called *scurvy.*
