How does your brain know whether to keep something as short term or long term memory?

I sure wish I could control it because there are things I wish I didn’t remember and I’m sure I forgot a lot of good things.

I think every memory is a short term memory until you remember it often then it converts to the long term memory

The latest evidence shows the brain creates both short and long term memories simultaneously.
