How exactly are old photos colorized? Is there some process that allows you to color black and white pictures or do you just pick some colors and let a program run?
Like coloring a coloring book, but with tech instead of crayons on paper. You load the picture in your graphic editor program, pick up the pen on your graphic tablet, select a color, and start coloring.

The latter.
Before we had good enough computers, people would just paint it with a paintbrush.
For historical photos, sometimes someone wrote down what color it was, other times the thing itself survived.
But for most stuff it’s just a guess.
