Laxatives generally contain a substance high in fibre or something that irritates the bowel lining e.g. senna that causes a movement.

It depends on the laxative, but the general idea is that the laxative causes more fluid (water) to be pulled into the intestines, which generally speeds up the digestive process, thus making you poop (sooner)
