How is it possible for people to “throw” their voice to make it sound like it’s coming from another direction?

Throwing the voice is an old English term for what most know as [Ventriloquism](https://images.glaciermedia.ca/polopoly_fs/1.23396095.1533914440!/fileImage/httpImage/image.jpg_gen/derivatives/landscape_804/damien-james-making-his-mark-in-magic-and-ventriloquism-0.jpg).

It comes from the fact that it gives the appearance that your voice is coming from the puppet in your hand, rather than your mouth. In reality your voice still comes from your mouth, it’s just a visual illusion.

It’s not as if you’d be able to stand here, and make it sound like your voice is coming from way over there, that’s a misnomer.
