How is my nose an endless snot machine when I’m sick?

Caught a winter cold and I feel like I’ve gone through a dozen tissue boxes in the last week. And yet it’s not over T_T

When your body detects an infection in its airway, like a cold, it signals the glands that produce mucus to go into overdrive. This way the constant flow of sticky snot grabs and pulls away any viruses it can reach and you blow them out your nose. Essentially your body is rinsing out your nose and throat to prevent further infection.

Mucus is one of your body’s natural defence mechanisms against infection. Mucus traps pathogens so that you cough/spit them out instead of ingesting them. When you’re sick, your immune system is in overdrive and it’s going to produce a lot more mucus to try to eradicate as much as possible.
