how ‘parts’ work in mathematics/cooking/baking/etc.?

Like when something says add 1 part A to 2 parts B. I cannot for the life of me conceptualize it in my head. Any help is appreciated!

Edit: I got so many explanations so quickly! Thank you all so much, I understand it much better now. Much love!

That is a simple ratio. “Part” could mean any measurement.

1 part A to 2 parts B means there’s twice as much B as there is A.

You could use cups, you could say for everyone 1 cup of A, there will be 2 cups of B.

A “part” is whatever specific measurement you choose.

“1 part water to 2 parts flour” could be 1 cup : 2 cups, or 1 liter : 2 liters, whatever.

The idea is that the *ratio* is what’s emphasized, and you can choose how much you’re making.

1 part to 2 parts is simply a way of describing a ratio. 1:2. For instance if we are using grams. 10grams of A and 20grams of B.

It’s a fractional way of expressing how much of a whole is separated into individual parts. If I’m making a drink that requires 1 part whiskey to 2 parts coke, you can visualize the whole drink as 3 equal parts, one of which is made of whiskey, 2 of which are made of coke.

Now, if I wanted double the amount, I’d still add 2 parts coke to every 1 part of whiskey. So if I add 2 ounces of whiskey, I need 4 ounces of coke.

It just means that, however much of A you decide to put, put twice as much B. 2:3?

For every 2 units of the A stuff, use 3 units of the B stuff. Wanna make twice as much food? You would use 4 units of A (double), which means you’ll use.. you guessed it, 6 units of B. Double again.

Many mixed drink recipes are in “parts” so that it’s easy to scale. 4 parts ginger beer, 1 part bourbon, half part lime juice. Now you can make one Kentucky Mule, you can put two in the shaker at once, or you can make a pitcher. Same recipe fits many sizes.

I’d like to add that I believe parts are generally volume by default unless otherwise specified. 2:1 flour to water means something very different if you’re using masses instead of volumes !
