Nobody gets rescued in mid-air. The authorities simply follow the balloonatic until he comes down. If he floats out of their jurisdiction, they usually consider him someone else’s problem.
Some baloonatics carry BB guns or pellet guns to puncture balloons and release gas. One was ‘rescued’ by friends on the ground who used a .22 rifle to bring him down.
‘Lawnchair Larry’ used a BB gun, but accidentally dropped it after shooting some balloons – but apparently not as many as he intended to. ( He somehow survived landing in electrical lines )
