Glucose is an energy source. The mitochondria in individual cells use glucose to create a molecule called adenosine triphosphate (ATP). ATP is what essentially starts all of the other reactions in the cell.

Energy is required to make proteins from amino acids. Protein synthesis requires a GTP molecule (same amount of energy as ATP) to attach an amino acid molecule to another. Without energy no protein.
