The reason people tend to get farsighted as they age is not because the lens changes shape. Rather the lens hardens making it more difficult to focus it. So the range of distances they can focus at becomes smaller. Normally you can focus past infinity so losing some of your farsighted vision is not that big of a deal. But losing the ability to focus on things close to you is a big problem. This is why old people tend to get corrections for their farsightedness. They are still nearsighted as well but may not need correction for this. You can get corrections for both using bifocal lenses or progressive lenses. People who are nearsighted as adults might need corrections for both as they age. But it will take them longer for the lens to harden enough for them to need correction for farsightedness.
