It’s just a convention to label the years. Actual scholars think that historical Christ wasn’t even born in 0001, and it was actually probably a few years off. It doesn’t matter for the purpose of labeling years. Most academics will use B.C.E. (before common era) rather than B.C. (before Christ).

Atheists accept the convention of our numbered years the same way that Christians accept Thor’s Day (Thursday). Doesn’t mean they believe in Thor.
