if I smash a bug and leave its carcass, will it serve as a warning to other bugs?

It actually depends on the bug! Some bugs release kind of pheromone-like compounds when they die, which other bugs of their kind can smell and the other bugs avoid the area. Obviously the idea is whatever killed Stacy the Bug might kill you too.
The trouble is some bugs (ants and termites, maybe others) are actually *attracted* to the smell of their dead buddies, so if you’re thinking of leaving some heads on the battlements do your research first. :/
