There is still a lot of studying to do on how the brain processes chemicals, but yes, we know that gonadal hormones being out of balance from what the brain wants, both for testosterone and estrogen, can, and does, cause these issues in both cases. Postmenopausal depression is very common for this exact reason. And regardless of Gonadal sex, everybody needs at least SOME of both oestrogens and androgens. Fun fact, while not universal, most trans people report near immediate improvements in their mental health, anxiety, and depression after starting HRT. The degree to which this is due to bringing hormonal levels in line with what the brain is asking for as opposed to satisfaction of progress is something that still needs to be studied, but what little research there is on our brains definitely implies that it plays a role and in fact, may be one of the primary sources of dysphoria.
