2 x 2 = 2 + 2 = 4 = 4

2 x -2 = -(2 + 2) = -(4) = -4

-2 x 2 = -2 + -2 = -2 – 2 = -4

-2 x -2 = -(-2 + -2) = -(-2 – 2) = -(-4) = 4

Try it with 3s

3 x 3 = 3 + 3 + 3 = 9

3 x -3 = -(3 + 3 + 3) = -(9) = -9

-3 x 3 = -3 + -3 + -3 = -3 – 3 – 3 = -9

-3 x -3 = -(-3 + -3 + -3) = -(-3 – 3 – 3) = -(-9) = 9

At least that is how I always envisioned it
