If one stick of dynamite produces x amount of energy why do several make an exponentially larger explosion and not just x+x?

Several explosions do not make exponentially larger explosion. It will just be x+x.

Though multiple explosions can be placed more efficiently than just putting them all in same place. They can also be blown up at slightly different times. So less of the explosion is wasted.
