Mumble rap at one point seemed to have been embraced by the makers of said music. But quickly became derisive. Mumble rap never claimed there wasn’t lyrics. There are. It’s just mumbled, or not enunciated clearly.

This genre of it can be called that, has already been on the decline. A lot of new rap, love it or hate it, has already moved passed this into its current form.

A lot of it is garbage in my opinion, make no mistake about that. However I have started to understand what it is, and why it exists so I spend a lot less time worrying about it. Lyrical rap, “real” rap, or whatever you want to call it still exists and has consistently topped charts and been critically well received, so don’t believe the hype about rap being dead or forever changed.

Thats not the entire concept. Basically the term “mumble rap” emerged as a derogatory term for a new style of rap that was getting popular in the 2010’s. There was definitely less emphasis on annunciation and word play so hip hop purists decided it was not “real” rap. If you listen closely and are familiar with regional slang its really not hard to understand what they are saying. So to put it simply, the songs do have actual lyrics.

It’s not that there aren’t any lyrics, it’s just that they mumble their words. It started out because a lot of rappers were drinking lean, which is codeine and promethazine mixed with sprite or something. Both of those drugs tend you make you pretty drowsy. Then other rappers started copying that kind of style.
