The liver has two “nodes” where lots of veins intersect. These cannot regenerate, wich is also the reason why you can also only donate half a liver once

If your liver is cirrhotic it already has a lot of scarring and damage to it, which means its ability to regenerate diminishes. Also, imagine how it’s struggling to function when it’s cirrhotic, taking off a portion of it would mean barely existent liver function in the patient in the meantime.
