In astronomy, what is anomalous reddening?

You can kind of parse it out from the name. “Anomalous” as in strange or uncommon, “reddening” being more red than what you would expect. So putting them together, you end up with stars that are redder than what you would expect from their mass and size.

Almost by definition then, you end up with something that is a bit of an outlier, without super digestible explanations. In fact my cursory search through the arxiv gave minimal explanations even in the literature, it was largely descriptions and documentation of new telescopes that looked at them.

If anyone else has papers that show some proposed explanation, I’d like to see it, but my understanding is that it’s still speculation.
