In causality what is the difference between a variable and a factor

Also how do I distinguish the two without all of the confusing jargon?

Could you give an example of the ambiguity? When talking about “something that causes something else”, the terms are casually interchangeable, but if you are trying to understand something like factor analysis then the terminology maybe be a bit more technically precise.

According to my understanding, a variable is a factor *with* the possibility of change which would influence the system; while a factor is concrete and influences the system in a predictable manner, good question.
