Similar to sentences, paragraphs, or chapters, is just a convenient break to change topics of the story.

Typically plays and movies will follow a 3 act structure: Act 1, setup; act 2, confrontation; act 3, resolution.

But if you watch a Tarantino movie then he might make it 6 acts as it hops around to different aspects of the story.

You can also see this three act structure in the original Star Wars trilogy. Ep IV introduces all the characters, but they mostly interact by space-fight and the good guys get a win. Ep V puts the good guys and bad guys face to face, and everything just keeps getting worse for the heros. Ep VI the heros work post their personal demons to rise up and defeat the incredible threat against all odds.
