In TV programs, when they refer to vehicles having 700 or 1000 hp, what are they refering to?

I know they refer to horsepower but I’m always confused and don’t know if they refer to HP or BHP.

In the US, they’re always referring to “SAE Net Horsepower” or “SAE Certified Power”, which includes the engine with all acessories, cooling, exhaust, and emission controls. SAE (formerly The Society of Automotive Engineers) sets the standards of the test to ensure the rated power is equivalent to what is delivered in the production car.
