In TV programs, when they refer to vehicles having 700 or 1000 hp, what are they refering to?

I know they refer to horsepower but I’m always confused and don’t know if they refer to HP or BHP.

This refers to horsepower. One horsepower is equal to about 746 watts. Horsepower gives an idea of the total potential of an engine, sans transmission or anything. More horsepower = more acceleration. Most American cars are only maybe 150 hp.
