Is it true that the older you get, the worse you’ll get at video games due to hand eye co-ordination?

I’m in my 40’s and I was just wondering when is the cut off when improvements stop happening and hand eye co-ordination decreases? I assume it does as you get older or is that not so? (I am a Gamer and I enjoy gaming as a means of stress relief and just wondering if there’s been studies saying such.)

I’m also in my 40’s and haven’t noticed any decline of hand eye coordination. I’m no doctor but I feel like it’s like a muscle – if you keep working with it, it will remain strong.

My reflexes aren’t what they used to be, though. That’s for sure.

If you are in your 40’s and consider yourself as good or better than when you were in your 30’s and 20’s then good on you.

There is no rule that you get worse, but it’s 100% true that hand-eye coordination goes down. That doesn’t mean you can’t still win, you just need to be more strategic.

Without knowing you personally, I bet you actually peaked at 27. You’ve been going downhill since, but your experience has carried you.

Yes. I was a goat with GTA IV and COD V. I don’t even play now because sucking so bad is frustrating. Used to pull 30-0. I’m 52

I had to quit playing Bayonetta because I couldn’t do the rapid button presses anymore, it was physically impossible for me to be fast enough.

There’s a different peak for everyone.  Look at mew2king from smash bros. Was still doing really well at major tournaments when he was 31.

There’s a lot more than just hand eye coordination (depending on the game obviously)

Strategy and reading your opponent are skills that can take years and years to master.  Look at chess grandmasters some have been exceptional into their 50s

There’s probably a point where the lack of hand eye coordination and reaction time catch up with you thoigh in terms of competitive play.

Reflexes and hand-eye coordination do decrease with age. E-gamers have a decline like conventional athletes. But, another important thing to remember is that as you get older, you also tend to have less time to devote to video games. I’m 31 and I’m not nearly as good at video games as I was when I was younger. I’m not at the age where it’s due to physical decline, but I am at an age where I can’t play video games like I used to. I i used to spend hours everyday playing CoD or FIFA, and now I just don’t have the time, or desire, to devote to games like that.

So while the drop off to your skill level likely is due in part to your age, it also might be due to the fact that you just can’t develop the skill with the same amount of time and effort you used to.

I’m 41, For me it’s not the hand eye coordination. I’m still an excellent shot with real firearms.

It’s the reflexes that have slowed. I’m just not as good at the fast twitch reflexes as I used to be.

Possibly if I sat down and made a dedicated effort to get good at FPS games again maybe it get it back, but I feel like that’s probably gone forever.

Athletic prime is somewhere close to 30.  Plus or minus 5 years.  Once you’re 35, its all downhill from there.  That being said, you’re not really ever “too old to game”.  Maybe too old for some kids game.  The games that are fast twitch.  Like FortNite.  And trying to be #1 in the world at it too.  That’d be 1 in a million even if you were 12 again.  But if you want to kick ass, best boomer games are games like WoW or POE or Grim Dawn.  These are ARPG and MMORPG.  People also like BG3 which is CRPG, which is basically a table top game (D&D) ported to PC(BG3).  These games are more about decisions and time investment rather than “I clicked this part of my screen 0.1 seconds faster than you” and that’s why I won.  Ultimately just find something you have fun playing.  Something not triggering.  And don’t get too competitive, relax and enjoy.

Play smarter not faster. Become a zen master who knows the winning move before the game even starts. You don’t need reflexes if you can read situations well and know the best course of action.

There is almost no research that heavily supports this and reactions only start slowing down around 40s
