Definitely bad. Smoking anything is bad for lungs, keeping your brain under mind-altering influence for prolonged periods of time will make you see world in warped, non-realistic form, and it will – slowly but surely – mess you up, also mess with your body’s normal responses to pain and temperature and stress and such.
Being high (of anything, really) in that matter is nearly same as being constantly drunk, depressed or in pain. If you spent a year of your life being in such state, what would it do to your personality, mental state, moods, ability to learn and such? You wouldn’t see or respond to world same way other people do, because everything you learn or experience – things that form you – is altered/corrupted.
That said, a joint every now and then (not daily!) probably isn’t bigger deal than beer or two. Humans are sturdy creatures.
If you don’t abuse it and use safer introduction methods (e. g. edibles or vaporizer), then it’s not really bad. But the key point is not to abuse it, and for some people it may become incredibly difficult. I recently quit after 4-5 bongs every single day, and I can tell it affected my mental state. Half a year later I’m pretty ok in that regard, but first few weeks were tough.
It depends on what you mean by bad, and who you are.
Physically, it’s bad for you if you smoke or vape it, because really only air should go in your lungs. Burning plant material is full of shit that’s not air. Too much cannabis use (maybe, more research needed) can cause something called cannabis hyperemesis syndrome, which causes violent vomiting after using cannabis. It seems to affect mainly people who use heavily for extended periods of time.
Psychologically, whether it’s bad for you or not depends a lot on who you are. If you’re young, under about 20 or 25, using weed might impair your brain development, though more research is needed. There is also evidence that cannabis use might exacerbate pre-existing latent psychological issues. That means if you have a psychological disorder that hasn’t shown up yet, using weed might cause it to.
Generally, it’s pretty safe (as far as mind altering drugs go), however. Millions of people use it without issue. Don’t smoke if you’re young or if you think you might have mental issues. Go slow if you decide to do it. If you have a trusted friend with experience, let them help guide you so you have a good time.
It’s bad if you use it before roughly the age of 25, as it alters the way your brain develops.
It’s bad if smoked, particularly if mixed with tobacco, but not nearly as bad as tobacco. Pretty much anything smoked increases your risk of cancer, but as things to smoke go its not the worst because unlike cigarettes, you’re not going to be smoking throughout the day every day multiple times, like 10-20+ (usually)
It does however increase your risk of things like bronchitus if smoked, not just cancer.
There are inconclusive studies linking heavy consumption to some anxiety disorders even after the age of 25, but nothing solid and definitive.
It’s not “technically” addictive, but you can get dependant on it.
Most of the risks are accociated with smoking, rather than marijuana itself. Edibles get rid of this problem, but there are not a lot of studies on the long term effects of these, but there’s no immediate red flags as of yet.
Overall however, it’s about moderation. If you use it occasionally and recreationally, you’re healthy and over the age of 25 you will most likely be fine. If you use it every day several times a day, particularly if smoked, it can cause problems.
“Bad” is subjective (by definition). But yeah, you’re really not supposed to breathe anything but air.
The main problem with marijuana in my (extensive) experience is that it makes you feel good/content/ok regardless of if you’re doing the things that a person should be doing to feel good/content/ok.
It’s like a pain killer, but pain is actually super important. Pain tells you when you need to stop and change what you’re doing. You can do a lot more damage to your body if you’re on pain killers because they can let you push past when your body is telling you to stop. Using weed, you can do a lot more damage to your life than you could otherwise.
Not that you shouldn’t smoke weed, or that everybody who smokes has a bad life. But you should be aware of how it can affect you and make adjustments knowing that it can silence a lot of the alarm bells that should tell you when your life is going to shit.
