is marijuana actually bad for you?

They say that it causes brain damage, this that and the next. Does it really just boil down to ‘lungs only supposed to breathe air’

Definitely bad. Smoking anything is bad for lungs, keeping your brain under mind-altering influence for prolonged periods of time will make you see world in warped, non-realistic form, and it will – slowly but surely – mess you up, also mess with your body’s normal responses to pain and temperature and stress and such.

Being high (of anything, really) in that matter is nearly same as being constantly drunk, depressed or in pain. If you spent a year of your life being in such state, what would it do to your personality, mental state, moods, ability to learn and such? You wouldn’t see or respond to world same way other people do, because everything you learn or experience – things that form you – is altered/corrupted.

That said, a joint every now and then (not daily!) probably isn’t bigger deal than beer or two. Humans are sturdy creatures.
